Flag of South Dakota was adopted November 9, 1992 in this form. It results from a change in the name of the State, which went from "The Sunshine State" to "The Mount Rushmore State". The flag consists of a blue background on which is drawn the seal of South Dakota, surrounded by yellow sunrays and the name of the state. Rays come from the old flag, which represented a sun in the center, compared with its former name. The seal wears different symbols. The hill and the river represent the beauty of South Dakota’s landscapes. The farmer, the beefs and the boat reflect agriculture and related trade. The important minerals are also present. South Dakota has joined the United States on 4 July 1890. Its capital is Pierre.
