Indiana State Flag

The flag of Indiana was adopted on 31 May 1917. It consists of a blue background on which are represented 19 five-pointed stars and a torch close to the Olympic one. It was adopted following a competition launched by the Daughters of the American Revolution (patriotic American Society) for the creation of the flag. Paul Hadley’s drawing was chosen out of more than 300 proposals. Only the name of the state was added at the time of its adoption. Indiana takes its name from the huge Indian community that lived here when French first came to explore the land in the seventeenth century. More than 15 different tribes have lived or have crossed this state during the centuries preceding colonization. Indiana joined the United States July 4, 1818. Indiana is known as the "Hoosier State" (still discussed origin), and its capital is Indianapolis.
