The flag of Massachusetts was adopted in this form March 21, 1971. It is composed of a white background on which is drawn the seal of the State. It is the only one that had previously contained a different verso because it wore (until 1971) a pine tree on a green blue shield, referring to the Navy of the State. The seal of Massachusetts is an Algonquin, who is an Indian warrior. The state is in fact the name of a Algonquin’s tribe, “the Massachusetts”, which could then be translated as "near the great hill”, in reference to Great Blue Hill, the most famous mountain of the State. A star symbolizes the country's accession to the United States, and the state motto is inscribed on a blue band "Ense Petit Placidam Sub Libertate Quietem": "With the weapons, and free, it seeks peace". Massachusetts has joined the United States on 4 July 1777, at the Declaration of Independence, as a part of the original thirteen states that created the United States. Massachusetts is known as the "Bay State" and its capital is Boston.
