Rhode Island State Flag

The flag of Rhode Island was adopted on 1st November 1897. It is composed of a white background on which is drawn a golden anchor in the center. Thirteen five-pointed golden stars are drawn around it, and a blue band appears at the bottom with the state motto: "Hope". Some historians relate these symbols to words found in the Bible: "We have Hope as an anchor of the soul". The name of Rhode Island was given by one of the settlers of that State, da Verrazano, who compared one of the islands along the east coast, the current Block Island, to the Greek island of Rhodes in Mediterranean. The State of Rhode Island is one of the oldest existing, since it was founded in 1636. Rhode Island has joined the United States on 4 July 1777, at the Declaration of Independence, as a part of the original thirteen states that created the United States. Rhode Island is known as the "Ocean State", and its capital is Providence.
