The flag of Louisiana was adopted May 7, 2006 in this form. It consists of a blue background on which is drawn a pelican and its three children, all of which are stressed by the motto of Louisiana 'Union - Justice - Confidence ". This "pelican" flag comes from the one of 1861. Louisiana, which was previously under french influence, had adopted a French flag with stars, and another composed of blue - white - red stripes, French flag’s colors. The pelican taking care of its children is an allegory of the care taken by the State of Louisiana to its inhabitants, the pelican being a bird known for overprotection it offers to its progeny in difficult times. It’s sometimes is interpreted as a symbol of the Passion of Christ. Louisiana has joined the United States on 4 July 1818. Louisiana is known as the "Pelican State", and its capital is Bâton-Rouge.
