South Korea Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the South Korean Flag
The flag of South Korea was adopted on 12 July 1948. It is composed of a white background, under a Taijitu (emblem in the form of Ying Yang without landlocked points) red on top and blue on bottom. This Taijitu is surrounded, on the axis of the diagonals by 4 black trigrams. A trigram is a compound of full or partial three lines parallel to each other and the same overall length. Here stand the trigrams from the Book of Changes, that evoke the four elements. They are placed in opposition to their complementary : Geon (earth) and Gon (air) are placed in the top left and bottom right, while Gam (water) and Li (fire) are placed at the top right and bottom left. This helps to balance the flag. It was conceived for the first time in 1882 by Park Yeonghyo.
