Greece Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Greek Flag
The flag of Greece was adopted in 1822. It represents 9 blue and white horizontal stripes, with a white cross on a blue background in the canton (upper left corner, at the hoist). The current flag was originally the one of the navy, the national flag was then a large white cross on a blue background. latter pattern appeared in 1807, when General Theodoros Kolokotronis had to swear on this banner. In 1821, the patriots who fought for independence adopted the slogan "freedom or Death". Translated into Greek, this one consists of nine syllables, which are symbolized in the nine stripes of the flag. It is also said that the five blue stripes could relate to the five seas around the coasts of Greece : Mediterranean, Thrace, Ionian , Crete, Aegean.
