Egypt Flag

The flag of Egypt is composed of 3 of the 4 pan-Arab colours, which are white, red, green and black. Only green is lacking thereof. It consists of three horizontal stripes: red - white - black, with the Eagle of Saladin in its center, the national emblem. Red represents the oppression put under the influence of King Farouk, until the military coup that overthrew in 1952. Unlike many flags, bearing red to symbolize the blood shed for independence, Egypt chose white to signify that this coup was done quietly and peacefully. Finally, black evokes British control over Egypt until 1922. The Eagle of Saladin, national symbol, bears a stripe with country's name in Arabic. This eagle takes its name directly from the Egyptian vizier Saladin, who reunited the Arab world on 12th century. It is used on several other arab flags, like Iraq or the Palestinian state, which has a flag, although not recognized by the international community.
