Cyprus Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Cypriot Flag
The flag of Cyprus was adopted on 19 August 1960. It is the result of a competition organized for the occasion, while the country previously only used the Greek and Turkish flags. It is in fact this year the State of Cyprus was established. It consists of a white background on which are affixed two olive branches topped with the country map in copper yellow . This color was chosen to recall the great resources of the country in copper. The olive tree is a strong reference to peace for a country that has long been the subject of clashes between Turkish and Greeks. The colors red and blue, that reminded the settlers flags, were also excluded from the specifications of the competition.
