Azerbaijan Flag

The explanation for the symbols of the Azerbaijani Flag

The flag of Azerbaijan was twice adopted : first in 1918, then in 1991 when the country regained its independence after the breakup of the former USSR. It consists of three horizontal stripes : blue - red - green, of equal width. The whole is surmounted by a white crescent that encompasses an eight-pointed star. The colours were defined as follows by Hussein Zade, great nationalist Azeri leader : blue for the country’s Turkish origin, red for progress to be undertook, and green for Islam. The crescent is also a strong Islamic symbol as on the flag of Algeria for example, while the star here evokes the eight ethnic origins of the country.
