Tunisia Flag
The explanation for the symbols of the Tunisian Flag
The flag of Tunisia was adopted in 1831. It will remain active even under French protectorate (from 1881 to 1956). It consists of a red background on which is drawn a white circle whose center is occupied by a crescent and a red five-pointed star. Those symbols are very deeply rooted in Muslim culture: the five branches of the five pillars of Islam: Muhammad, prayer, Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca and almsgiving, and crescent for the last crescent of the moon, symbolizing the end of Ramadan. The red symbolizes the blood of the soldiers who fought the Ottomans in 1574, before being colonized. The white circle is recognized as a universal symbol of the sun.
