Romania Flag

The explanation for the symbols of the Romanian Flag

The flag of Romania was adopted in its present form 27 December 1989. He had been in 1867 in the same form, but the communist regime that ruled the country from 1948 to 1989, until the fall of Ceausescu, had added a coat of arms in the center. The latter was immediately removed in 1989 to erase the dark days of dictatorship from memories . The shield which occupied the center of the flag was indeed a strong political symbolism, and even if the country had not yet emerged from poverty and crisis, a new start was needed. The current flag consists of three vertical stripes: cobalt blue - chrome yellow and vermilion red. This flag is sometimes confused with Chad’s one, where blue is indigo, even if the colors follow the same layout. This is also the case with that of Andorra and Moldova, but those have a coat of arms in the center. The colours have a strong symbolic in Romania : blue represents freedom (the sky), yellow prosperity (wheat and agriculture), red brotherhood (blood shed). These colours come from the Romanian Revolution of 1821, which failed.
