Luxembourg Flag

The explanation for the symbols of the Luxembourgers Flag

The flag of Luxembourg was adopted in 1972. It is composed of three horizontal stripes: red - white - blue. It is very close to the flag of the Netherlands, but is distinguished by the blue colour : the flag of Luxembourg is much lighter. Their dimensions are also different (this one is wider). Several possibilities are discussed about its origins. Some believe it is simply a derivative of the Dutch flag, since the country was managed by the Orange-Nassau for very long. It seems that this interpretation is wrong because the flag first appeared around 1830, while a Belgian insurrection. However, the Belgians and the Dutch were bitter enemies, which excludes merger with the Dutch flag. In fact it is quite likely the flag of the Counts of Luxembourg, which wore a red lion on light blue and white horizontal stripes. This flag would be the resumption of a former local flag, with the ancient arms.
