Bulgaria Flag

The explanation for the symbols of the Bulgarian Flag

The flag of Bulgaria was adopted in 1879. It is composed of three horizontal stripes of equal width : white - green - red. It is based on the flag of the great Russia, which was for a time abandoned when the communist regime ruled the country, and then reintroduced. This flag takes the colours white and red from that one. Green, however, is very special and rare for a flag of eastern Europe. Indeed, most countries in this part of the world have adopted panslave* colors (red - blue - white). This is the case for example of their Croatian neighbour. These colors, which emphasize the common origin of the people symbolize the people (red), nobility (white) and the bourgeoisie (blue). Bulgarian power chose to show, through the choice of the color green, the natural wealth of the country. Medium arms of Bulgaria appear until 1990 in the canton. They are composed of a golden lion on a red background in a shield surmounted by the Bulgarian Crown.
